Floor plans

Good morning,

I've had a request to see the floor plans in SketchUp to help with visualization. At present, these 2D plans are the best that I have, but I'm working on getting a SketchUp version ready. I'll keep you posted.

As a side note, it would be helpful if you all would post comments directly to the blog. It'll be much easier for me to follow up if they're in one location. Thanks!

  1. Thanks for the updates, Heather. I have tons of questions - none of which need to be answered directly (or at all, I suppose). Perhaps you could answer in future blog posts.

Do you have a visual of what the exterior of your finished house will look like? Is the exterior guided or limited by your choice of neighborhood (i.e., are there HOA restrictions or are you free to build any style home within the community?) or site (it looks open and grassy)?

How did you go about selecting a floorplan and room layout? Based on walkthroughs of existing homes, experience in past homes, wishful thinking, or divine intervention?

How have you incorporated new technology, materials or methods into your home? Why?

  2. Hey, Erinn,

I hope I answered most of your questions in the post. For the others, yes, the HOA has restrictions, but it was mostly the developer. We had to have a developer-approved contractor and he needed to conform to the neighborhood aesthetics.

Our GC gave us an initial floorplan based on our stated needs and we tweaked and tweaked and tweaked for about two months before settling on our approved plan. Our main concerns were getting Nate's bedroom on the main level and finding a way to fit an office on the main level (who can be creative in a basement??). We tried to have a stand alone office for a while, but it increased the sf too much, so we came up with the plan to put it in the MBR, but behind pocket doors.

I really feel like most of the basement is wasted space for now, but I know that as the kids get older, it's going to be a great space for them to hang out with friends. The best part of the basement will be the en-suite guest room we're including. And the play room which I won't feel compelled to keep tidy all the time.

Thanks for the great questions. Feel free to keep them coming.
